Understanding Trane Warranties: Types, Coverage, and Key Details

When considering an HVAC replacement, one critical factor is the quality of the warranty offered. A solid warranty can provide peace of mind, protecting your investment in a new heating and cooling system. At Trane, we’re proud to stand behind our products with comprehensive warranties that rank among the best in the industry.
Before diving in, keep in mind that only licensed HVAC professionals should install and maintain your system. DIY or handyman installations can void your warranty due to risks of improper installation, which may lead to early wear, parts failure, or even system breakdowns.
Here’s an overview of the three types of Trane warranties:
Base Limited Warranty
Registered Limited Warranty
Extended Warranty
Let’s explore each in detail.
1. Base Limited Warranty
This warranty applies if your unit isn’t registered within 60 days of installation. It covers parts that fail due to manufacturer defects but excludes labor costs. Most products are covered for five years, though coverage length varies by product type.
Highlights of Coverage:
AC Units & Heat Pumps: Compressor, outdoor coil, and parts – 5 years
Furnaces: Parts – 5 years; Heat exchanger – 20 years
Air Handlers: Indoor coil and parts – 5 years
Packaged Units: Compressor, coils, and parts – 5 years; Heat exchanger – 20 years
Cased & Uncased Coils: Coil and parts – 5 years
Ductless Systems: Coverage varies by system
2. Registered Limited Warranty
Registering your product within 60 days of installation extends your warranty coverage. To register, you’ll need your product's serial number, found on dealer paperwork or the unit itself. Once registered, this warranty provides parts coverage for 10 years or more, depending on the product, but still excludes labor costs.
Highlights of Coverage:
AC Units & Heat Pumps: Compressor and outdoor coil – 10 years; Select units offer up to 12 years on the compressor
Furnaces: Parts – 10 years; Heat exchanger – 20 years
Air Handlers: Indoor coil and parts – 10 years
Packaged Units: Compressor and coils – 10 years; Heat exchanger – 20 years (up to 12 years for select compressors)
Cased & Uncased Coils: Coil and parts – 10 years
Ductless Systems: Coverage varies by system
Additional Perks:
The Registered Limited Warranty is transferable to a new homeowner within 90 days of selling your property, adding value to your home.
3. Extended Warranty
For extra peace of mind, many HVAC dealers offer optional extended warranties that may include labor coverage. These warranties often bundle perks like maintenance agreements, discounts on parts, and priority service during peak seasons.
What’s Not Covered
While Trane warranties offer extensive coverage, they don’t include certain expenses:
Labor costs for repairs
Shipping and freight expenses for replacement parts
Damages caused by improper installation, DIY maintenance, or external factors like weather events
Products purchased uninstalled
Always review your warranty documentation for full details.
Maintenance: The Key to Longevity
Proper maintenance is essential to maximize your system’s lifespan and efficiency. Consider signing a maintenance agreement with your HVAC dealer for regular tune-ups and added benefits like repair discounts and priority scheduling during extreme weather.
Getting Support
If you need HVAC repairs or a replacement, contact your local Trane dealer. They’ll diagnose issues, order parts, and file warranty claims on your behalf. Just remember, unless you have an extended warranty, labor costs will be your responsibility.
When scheduling a new system installation, ask your dealer to register your warranty. Always confirm registration by requesting a warranty certificate or using the Trane warranty lookup tool within 60 days of installation.
State-Specific Notes
In some locations, such as Florida, warranty registration rules differ. For example, as of July 1, 2024, Florida residents retain warranty rights even if registration isn’t completed. Check your state or province laws for specifics.
